Plant-Based Substitution Workshop

How do plant-based products substitute for animal products? What does this mean for animal welfare funding decisions?

Target: May 2026 · Fully online · ~2.5 hours of live sessions + asynchronous participation

This workshop examines the Plant-Based Substitution Pivotal Question: how much do plant-based alternatives actually displace animal product consumption? Understanding this is crucial for animal welfare funders deciding between PBA investments and other interventions.

Note: This workshop is still in early planning. We're gathering initial interest and availability. Final dates and agenda will be confirmed once we have responses from key participants.

When Could You Join?

All fields in this section are optional — use whichever is easiest. Even a rough sense of your availability helps.

This is the easiest option — just describe when you're free in May 2026. We'll use AI to find the best overlap across everyone. Include your time zone if it's not obvious.

Click cells for any time blocks you could join. Click a date to select that row, a time header to select that column, or a week label to select the whole week. All times US Eastern; hover for UK/CET.

Tip: You don't need to fill in the grid if you've described your availability above — either or both is fine.

Which Potential Segments Interest You?

All fields in this section are optional. You don't need to attend the full session — indicate your interest in passive or active participation for each segment. Click ☆ to cycle through priority levels: ★ (interested) or ★★ (high priority). (more about each segment)

Stakeholder Context (~15 min): Why ACE and funders care about plant-based substitution effects; current funding landscape for PBA development vs other AW interventions.
Evidence Review (~30 min): Overview of scanner data studies, choice experiments, and event studies; what methods are most credible and what do they tell us.
Bray et al. Paper Discussion (~25 min): Deep dive into the price endogeneity puzzle—why do instrumental variable estimates often contradict experimental evidence? What does this mean for interpreting PBA substitution research?
Substitution Impact Discussion (~30 min): Focus on the key question—if PBA prices dropped 10%, what would happen to chicken consumption? Synthesizing evidence and expert views.
Pivotal Questions & Beliefs Elicitation (~20 min): Walking through operationalized questions (PBA_01, PBA_02, etc.); eliciting participant forecasts before and after reviewing evidence.
Animal Welfare ROI Panel (~30 min): Is funding PBA development competitive with corporate campaigns? Funder perspectives on decision-relevant thresholds and current uncertainty.
